The Midland School is a non-profit organization for developmentally disabled students and adults.
Founded in 1960, The Midland School started as a small, family-oriented school for 1 full-time and 2 part-time students.
Today, The Midland School is a comprehensive special education program that is dedicated to the academic, social, emotional and career education needs of children with developmental and intellectual disabilities from Pre-K through age 21.
A major component of Midland is our adult programs, which includes our Work Center, Day Habilitation and Community Residential programs.
Midland promotes personal choices, self-advocacy, full community inclusion and self determination to support each participant’s goals.
*INTRODUCTION*
The Community Specialist role provides personal care and skill development training for participants in Midland Adult Services (MAS) Day Habilitation program.
The ideal candidate will work towards the attainment of each participant’s goals and completion of all required documentation.
*RESPONSIBILITIES*
*Teaching and Behavioral Support*
* Teach and implement groups, as assigned;
* Provide personal care and assistance to all participants consistent with their needs;
* Have an understanding and able to implement behavioral treatment plans;
* Assist in the development of weekly activity schedules and community based activities, based on individual needs.
*Administrative*
* Completion of required documentation;
* Participation in service plan or IDT meetings;
* Prepare, organize and ensure cleanliness for daily activities;
* Assist participants with the transition to/from the day habilitation program.
*Other*
* May require transportation/driving of participants to/from the day habilitation program;
* Assist in the washroom, lifting and transferring of participants.
*REQUIREMENTS *
* Must be at least 18 years of age or older;
* High School diploma or equivalent;
* Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (driver’s abstract is conditional on hire);
* Ability to establish a comfortable and supportive relationships;
* Prior experience working with intellectually and/or developmentally disabled individuals (more than 1 year is highly preferred);
* Self-motivated team players with a positive, energetic and professional demeanor is highly preferred;
* Must be able to complete all required Division of Developmental Disabilities training and successfully maintain training(s) throughout tenure with The Midland School;
* Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills;
* Ability to sit/stand for extended periods;
* Ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds;
